Logitech G15: Rubber gets sticky

Posted by on Saturday, 20 July, 2013

The Logitech G15 was a great “gamers keyboard”. I bought it years back because the screen was awesome to do some programming with. The keyboard was coated with some sort of rubber, giving it a very awesome matte finish and touch. Unfortunately, this coating does not stand the test of time too well, and it becomes sticky. Read here how to solve this. Read the rest of this entry »

Google Scholar citation email verification does not work

Posted by on Friday, 3 August, 2012

Anyone who has ever done anything even remotely related to science is probably aware of Google Scholar. There’s this feature where you can keep track of your citations (e.g. how many and which papers by which authors cite your publications). A very nifty feature and quite easy to set up. Your data will only show up after your email address has been verified. And that’s where stuff borked.

The verification link did not work, giving a 404 Not Found error. After inspecting the url I noticed that the dots in my email address had been removed. I figure they probably have some scripts there like php’s
htmlspecialchars() and addslashes() to prevent such things as SQL injection, but apparently this also removes dots from the email address being verified, and then obviously the url does not coincide with what I entered, yielding 404.

Solution: simply add the dots in the url and it works.

Review: various tactical pants go head-to-head

Posted by on Thursday, 14 June, 2012

While most fashion blogs will be discussing the colours and looks and compatibility with current fashion trends when discussing something as basic as pants, we at Freeminded like to keep our heads cool and focus on what truely matters: the tool must fit the purpose, and design should not interfere with utility.

This is the reasoning behind tactical pants: 100% utility, 0% consessions. Having tried and tested quite a few, we decided to come up with an overview of the pants we have reviewed, and maybe even throw in a comparison!

5.11 Zipper-pull tabs: sell them separately please

Posted by on Wednesday, 16 May, 2012

Whoever wears gloves on a regular basis knows that having small zippers on your gear is inconvenient. No matter if they are winter gloves, motorcycle gloves or tactical gloves – even the most dexterous and nimble gloves may cause trouble with the small zippers on some equipment. Many manufacturers include “zipper-pull tabs”: a piece of string (paracord or something similar) with a small tab. Unfortunately, not every manufacturer does this so I spend some time equipping all of my new gear with zipper-pull tabs.

Recently I acquired a 5.11 Sabre 2.0 Jacket which sports some really nice zipper-pull tabs. And since 5.11 is known for listening to its customers – they are the ultimate specialist when it comes to the gear, right? – I asked them if it would be possible to sell these zipper-pull tabs separately. Ideally in two sizes – for both small and large sized zippers, and in several color schemes. At least desert tan, olive drab and black. Please.

So let’s see if our prayers will be answered 😉
